Having absorbed a good deal of geophysical knowledge, he moved to a start-up exploration and production company with Jim Rippy at Sunnybrook Oil and Gas. He continued there until the company was sold in 1984 and thereafter started his own company which has run in different iterations since that time.

He served as the Vicar of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Lindale from 2013 -2019 retiring in June of 2019. As a bi-vocational priest John will continue his oil and gas exploration business, Carr Resources, Inc., and also serve in the Episcopal Church as a supply priest in the Diocese of Texas.
John married his high school sweetheart, Lucy, in 1977 and they moved to Tyler in January of 1978 where they raised their two children, Hunter and Megan. His hobbies include long-distance motorcycle rides, sailing, hunting, and fishing.
